about
When I wrote St Kilda beach, it was a very hot, dry summer and I was deep in my Elvis phase, listening to a lot of melodramatic 50s and 60s music about being heartbroken and crying all over town. I liked how in the songs, the singers could be sad and lonely but in an elegant and witty way with a ¾ time signature. It features vocals from Gabriella Cohen, who I was a fan of, then serendipitously met and ended up getting her and her musical partner Kate to record and produce the song in my kitchen.
This song is my ode to the best but worst beach in melbourne, in all its magical, beautiful, overhyped, polluted glory.

st kilda beach - lyrics
chords - C Am F G repeated
st kilda beach made me sick
the sunset so beautiful
it’s so hot i could puke
tears fall on my bicycle
i wanna ride away on the boardwalk
i wanna ride all the way to elwood
my skin is so tanned
the cells in trauma
i just sent that message
cause i needed some drama
the backs of my hands
are like an old lady
in 50 years
i’ll regret my decisions
i wanna ride away on the boardwalk
i wanna ride away never talk to anyone else except for you but only on my phone
cause i am so alone i’m so alone
st kilda beach made me sick
the sunset so beautiful
it’s so hot i could puke
tears fall on my bicycle
i wanna ride away on the boardwalk
i wanna ride all the way to elwood
